Guess I have to address the big entertainment news everyone’s gabbing about. Taylor Swift dropped— Just kidding, not that news (but good for her!). I mean how Disney announced its master plan for building out the SWSU. Their Star Wars Streaming (only on Disney+) Universe roadmap includes TEN new shows set to debut over the next few years. Soooooo much BYE (Baby Yoda Energy).
Not to be outdone, by themselves, super D also reminded investors about the EIGHT Marvel stories it’s got queued up for Plus. By my math, we should get one new episode of something Star Wars or Marvel-y to stream from next year till—what—the end of man? Does the whole world implode when Spidey meets Obi Wan?
A lot of people are stoked, I’ve heard, but sorry if I’m not like thrilled by the idea of one entertainment monolith sinking 8-bill a year into the same few ever-expanding worlds. Too big to fail / so bloated I can’t imagine having the will to keep up. I’m more likely to be streaming more singular programming like Queen’s Gambit or Industry or whatever FX on Hulu is showing in a galaxy one, two clicks away.
What about this weekend?
There’s the second to last episode of Mando season two.
What a hypocrite.
I don’t know. There’s really nothing new I’m planning to watch.
What about the Meryl Streep movie?
Oh right, Let Them All Talk on Max. Streep and Soderbergh, yeah I’ll watch that, eventually.
I’m surprised you’re not all-in on the new teen drama set at an exclusive ballet school. It looks dark. Edgy.
Look at you! Don’t worry, I’ll be checking out Tiny Pretty Things but that’s not out on Netflix until Monday.
Well then.
This weekend in 1984 ... somehow after all these years I’ve managed to gloss over a movie by one of my favorite directors. John Carpenter’s Starman, starring Jeff Bridges, came out during JC’s epic 10-year run from 1978’s Halloween to They Live in the late 80s. This story about an alien who takes the form of a woman’s dead husband is your classic tale of literal star-crossed lovers. Who could resist The Dude doing his best impersonation of … man? If you like your sci-fi with lots of heart, search ‘New Release 1984’ in Spotify or Apple and subscribe to our futuristic podcast. Tune in Monday 🎧
