Be careful. The longer the days grow, the more you intrude on the dark. When you push something to its brink, there are two possible outcomes. One, it goes away ... two, it pushes back. Hard. Light alone provides no solace. So they say ... on the longest day of the year, we have the most to fear. And I swear, if you plan to survive summer solstice—this Saturday—then drape yourself in linen and fortify your maypole because ... it’s time for The Midsommar Awards!
Most mind-expanding/flattening ... I have no idea if the ideas in DEVS (FX on Hulu) are really that deep or pretty basic but the presentation is so lush I couldn’t help but go along for the ride. Or did I ever have a choice?
Most pregnant, with emotion ... Do you suffer from occasional bouts of detachment? Want to remember what it feels like to feel things? Normal People (Hulu again) is a defib machine disguised as a tv show. Turn it on when you need a jolt back to life.
Most decadent and feastiful ... I still can’t get over the simplicity and effectiveness of the premise for The Platform (Netflix) … so there’s this vertical prison where a Marie Antionette style food spread gets lowered from cell to cell until it runs out. Mmmm. Quality of life is determined (at random?) by which floor you’re assigned to. If you’ve read (or seen) High Rise, this is a bare bones version of the same idea.
Most deserving of sacrifice ... Joe Exotic is not a cult hero. He killed somewhere between 5 and 100 tigers because they were nothing more than props to him in his pathetic obsession to get famous. I can’t judge anyone for watching, since I lapped it up too, but let’s drop any petitions for his pardon, please.
Most likely to cult the fuck up ... Yep, I could see the cast of Outer Banks (Netflix) taking a summer vacay to Sweden and getting swept up in the communal and ritualistic lifestyle of a pagan cult. By the way, where should my ‘OBX’ tattoo go?
This weekend in 1984 ... hot on the heels of Ghostbusters and Gremlins came a scrappy little movie that refused to be bullied by its big, bad competition. Who doesn’t remember the wise words of Miyagi and the final blow Daniel-san delivers to Johnny’s dumb chin. Don’t even start with this Johnny’s the real hero of The Karate Kid BS or I’ll be forced to lay a swift verbal smackdown on your ass. Search ‘New Release 1984’ in Spotify or Apple podcasts if you’d like to hear us discuss that and tons more! Tune in Monday 🎧
